Wayne Bedggood, Mayor of the Upper Hunter Shire Council and Blandford Public School students Angus Speck, 10, Oliver Cornall, 10, Jack Teague, 12, and Charlotte Brooks, 12, cool down under the new shade shelter at the Murrurundi and District War Memorial Swimming Pool.

NEW shade shelter has been installed at Murrurundi War Memorial Swimming Pool, making it easier for swimmers to stay out of the sun.

The shelter is over the shallow end of the pool to offering protection for the smallest of swimmers learning to swim, or for people relaxing in the shallows.

Wayne Bedggood, Mayor of the Upper Hunter Shire Council, said the shade from a state government grant of $24,000 was welcome relief.

“There had been some shade trees for patrons near the pool, however those trees have been removed due to deterioration from age and debris dropping into the pool,” Mayor Bedggood said.

“The recent hot weather reminds us how important it is to provide appropriate shade for public facilities so I was pleased to see the Shire has been successful in gaining grants for shade provision at the Murrurundi Swimming Pool,” he said.

“Council takes skin cancer prevention very seriously and understands the duty of care to the public.

“We endeavour to shade public parks and recreational spaces where possible,” Mayor Wayne Bedggood said.

Other groups which received shade funding from the state Government’s NSW Cancer Institute included Woolooma Sport and Recreation Club and Merriwa Showground.
