“It is an honour to present these awards and reflect upon the outstanding achievements of these members,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.

“Between them, these three volunteers have amassed 154 years of experience in the NSW RFS, this is an inspirational achievement,” he said.

“Along with Rod, the two volunteers receiving Life Membership must also be congratulated.

“Peter Gallagher joined the Rural Fire Service in 1956 and through the years has held the ranks of Deputy Captain and Deputy Group Captain.

“A member since 1951, Keith Leven has been Deputy Captain and held the position of Senior Deputy Captain up until as recently as 2011,” he said.

“It is the commitment of all those recognised today and indeed all members, that will see the Cassilis Brigade maintain a strong presence in the community into the future,” Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.

Andrew Luke, superintendent zone manager Liverpool Range Fire Service said the local bush fire service was strong for a small community.

“It is totally run by volunteers, so it is a significant milestone by the local people,” Mr Luke said.

“They do the full suite of fire fighting from motor vehicle accidents because they cover part of the Golden Highway, they also do structural fire fighting in and around the village of Cassilis and they also attend bush fires including out of area support,” he said.

“In 2009 they had a number of their members attend the devastating Black Saturday bush fires in Victoria,” Luke Andrews said.
