AT 7:30 this evening emergency services were called to a one vehicle accident on the New England Highway approximately 4.5 kilometres south of Wingen.

The white utility had been travelling south on the highway, when it had a mechnical failure.

The front drivers side suspension may have failed, causing parts to fall off the car and ignite the dry grass on the side of the road.

Dave Faulks was the first response for the Wingen Brigade Rural Fire service and said the railway line helped contain the grass fire.

“The fire was held by the railway line,” he said.

“We went into the rail corridor to extinguish the fire, after contacting the railways and they made sure the signals were activated to stop the trains,” said Mr Faulks.

The Kingdon Ponds Brigade Rural Fire Service and police were also in attendance.

The driver is fine.
