A 27 year old man was arrested at Lake Haven on Monday, charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and was given conditional bail before being due to appear in Wyong Local Court on July 3.

The charge relates to an alleged offence on May 19 when Ryan Holman a 22 year old player for the Murrurundi Mavericks was rendered unconscious then allegedly set upon by Denman Devils player Ilipsa Cama, who witnesses claim was punching Ryan in the head.

Ryan was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle suffering fractures to his jaw and dental trauma, he underwent surgery and brain trauma assessment, before being release a week later.

Ilipsa Cama received a 13 week ban from Group 21 and Ryan’s family made a report to police, who began an investigation into the incident.

The local rugby league community was shocked by the on-field incident and the penalty handed down by Group 21.

While the Murrurundi Mavericks planned to appeal the judicial decision, the appeals process is currently only open to a player who has been suspended, not players who may have been impacted.
