THE Kia Ora music camp began today and will culminate in a concert on Friday night.

Aaron Rothemund was once a student who participated in the camps and is now the assistant administrator and said the camp is a great opportunity for students living in a regional area.

“We don’t get things like this in regional areas with the creative arts and it is nice for students to have something aside from the day to day music lessons and be able to do stuff they love,” said Mr Rothemund.

“I was a student of the camps and now teach at the conservatorium, but being back here in this role is much more stressful,” he laughed.

“As a tutor is is fun too and we are getting former students come back to the camp as tutors who now have a career in music which is great, but this year I am running around checking everything is ok and reminding myself it all comes together on the night,” Aaron Rothemund said.

This year the most popular elective is the Japanese Taiko drumming and the popular marimbas are back.

The camp also includes choir, the amazing voice competition, concert band, jazz band, strings and the national academy of dance.

The concert will be at 6pm on Friday at the multi-purpose centre, Scone High School.

Tickets are available through Council.
