THIS year approximately 400 competitors competed in the Scone Horse trials at Broomfield in Gundy.

A sombre minute of silence was observed in remembrance of Olivia Inglis, who passed away following an accident at the trials last year.

Blair Richardson the president of the Scone Horse Trials said that since the young riders passing there had been more than $160,000 raised for the Olivia Inglis Foundation with funds to be used to introduce safety innovations into the sport.

Despite the wet weather the event was considered a success by organisers and the crowd.

“We had a bit of rain during the night and a bit through the day but it didn’t really bother us too much, it actually made the ground soften up a little bit for the cross country,” said Mr Richardson.

“We had two Rio Olympians competing at the venue this year, it is regarded as one of the best events in New South Wales and Australia, last year Shane Rose had his horse here that he took to Rio Olympics, it is regarded as a lead up event to some of the bigger championships,” he said.

“We had an international course designer John Nicholson and we had a judge come over from New Zealand Bill Phisky as well,” he said.

“It is supported by a lot of local businesses who sponsor the event and we just want to thank all of the local volunteers, the local businesses that sponsor and support it, if we didn’t have the local businesses the competitors wouldn’t have an event  to come to,” Blair Richardson said.

Jessica Rae, a national two star competitor on Rascal was trailing Olympian Heath Ryan when his horse refused a jump during the cross country and she went on to win the final event.

“He was leading going into the cross country and he had one refusal, that’s eventing and that’s why there is three phases,” said Mr Richardson.

“The crowds were great, especially on the Saturday night with the twilight show jumping, all the sponsors turned up, it’s only the main two classes competing, Belltrees Public School host the barbeque and sold steak sandwiches and the bar was there for all the other spectators and competitors, it was a good night, the rain held off just in time,” Blair Richardson said.
