Comedy Capers for Drought Support

Filed in Recent News by March 27, 2019

THIS weekend a bus load of retired first-grade rugby league stars, Psychs on Bikes, with ventriloquist and comedian Darren Carr are heading to the Upper Hunter to support drought affected communities.

Led by former NRL star, Mick Andrews, who is a regular visitor to Scone and comes from a rural background said they wanted to put on a free event so that everyone in the community could forget about the drought for a couple of hours.

“On the farm it is 24 hour relentless, you work on the farm together, then you come home and stare at each other and there is no relief from the drought, and hopefully by us coming up there and putting on a comedian who is very, very funny it will maybe lighten their load for a little while and they can forget about the drought for a few hours,” said Mick Andrews.

“If they are having a tough time, they can go and talk to somebody and Saturday night might be just the thing they need,” he said.

“It’s great to see people’s faces and we’re not raising money, we’re not asking for money, we’re just there to hopefully make their life a little bit better for a couple of hours,” he said.

Mick has been a regular visitor to Scone since his brother lived here for a few years working for the DPI.

“I know a lot of people in Scone and we have been to the Scone rodeo for the last eight years and we go to the King of the Ranges,” said Mick.

“And my uncle used to work for the pastoral company that ran Glenrock Station and Belltrees out there years ago,” he said.

“My brother will be coming back down from Armidale for the weekend and it will be great to catch up with everyone,” Mick Andrews said.

The Itinerary:

The first stop of the day will be Aberdeen’s Scanlon Shield Day on Saturday, before heading to Scone for the main event.

Psychs on Bikes will roll into the Scone RSL Club at 5pm to provide free health checks and mental health support.

The South’s Men of League players will meet the locals, enjoy some free finger food before enjoying a comedy show featuring Australia’s leading stand up ventriloquist and comedian Darren Carr at 7:30pm.

Everyone in the community is invited to this free event.

On Sunday, children and adults are invited to a morning fun skills clinic at Scone Junior Rugby League grounds from 10am.
