Council Corner Campbell’s

CAMPBELL’S Corner is a show piece in the main street of Scone, is heritage listed and is in a heritage conservation area, yet did not have Council approval for the bright red and green exterior.

Meanwhile the Civic Theatre, which is being renovated has had to adhere to a myriad of heritage guidelines including having special render made, old tools being recreated to do the work, with ongoing approval and consultation with heritage architects and engineers.

Steve McDonald, the new general manager for Upper Hunter Shire Council said he is concerned with the inconsistent approach to heritage in the Shire and will be approaching the owner of Campbell’s Corner.

“A letter is being sent out this week to every owner in the heritage conservation area, to make them aware of their obligations under heritage,” said Mr McDonald.

“We will be contacting the owners of Campbell’s Corner and the first instance get an understanding of what their plans are for the building and if they want to do further renovations they will have to comply with the relevant heritage conservation guidelines and see what options there may be to rectify things,” he said.

“It is possible for Council to sue, but in the first instance we will work with the owners,” Steve McDonald said.
