BELOVED local Dr John Paradice has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia and also a local award for Special Excellence in the field of medical excellence at the Scone Australia Day celebrations today.

Dr Paradice came to Scone in 1957 to build a career in medicine and raise a family with his wife Bobby and along the way contributed significantly to our community.

Dr Paradice said he was overwhelmed by the award and was glad to be part of the Scone community.

“I was very surprised, I’ve had a wonderful time in Scone and the practice has been a joy,” said Dr John Paradice.

“When I was in England in 1955 training with David Warden he told me about Scone and said I should come and see this place,” he said.

“I looked at practices throughout New South Wales, but I had an affinity with this place and the people in it and I’ve been here ever since.

“I’ve enjoyed the continuity of family medicine, of caring for the whole family and that is very important.

“I’ve delivered lots of babies and being part of the general life in Scone,” he said.

Dr Paradice’s advice to young doctors was to “Get to the bush as soon as you can!”

“I was born and bred in Sydney, but thankfully I married a country girl from Young who wanted to settle here too,” he said.

Despite his huge contribution to medicine and the local community of Scone, he feels is greatest legacy is his family.

“I have six children and 15 grandchildren who have all made me proud and have all become successful in their fields,” he said.

“No one went into medicine though, but I do have a granddaughter studying diagnostic radiology,” joked Dr Paradice.
