FIREFIGHTERS fighting the Sir Ivan Fire continue to be vigilant in their efforts to control the blaze which has burnt over 54000 hectares so far with a perimeter of over 200km.

“Firefighters have done some very good work over the last couple of days and most of the fire is contained, there is a section  of the fire southwest of Casillis which crews are working with heavy plant and aircraft to contain,” Tim Carroll from NSW Rural Fire Service said.

Warmer temperatures are expected again on Friday and fire crews are preparing the area.

“There is quite a large crew around the fire and also we have crews strengthening containment lines around the perimeter ahead of warmer temperatures on Friday.”

“Firefighters are hoping to have the fire contained by tomorrow afternoon ahead of those deteriorating conditions,” said Mr Carroll.

Some roads have been reopened but extreme caution should be exercised.

“The Golden Highway and Black Stump Way are open but they could be subject to short term closures at short notice, we have had reports from firefighters there are large numbers of stock and wildlife in the road corridor as well as utility workers and firefighters working of those roads, we are asking drivers to use caution and drive to conditions,” Mr Carroll said.
