THIS weekend Scone Brumbies rugby union will host their first women’s 7’s tournament.

Kate Brown, a former local Scone resident and Australian rugby union player will be returning home to play in the tournament, but will be playing for a team from the Central Coast.

Seven teams are traveling from throughout the state to be part of the tournament including the NSW Fijian side and teams from Sydney, Tamworth and Newcastle.

See match timetable below.

Bob Davidson, president of the Scone Brumbies said he was excited to see women’s 7’s gaining momentum and for Scone to be leading the way.

“It’s the first time we’ve had an all female Scone rugby 7’s side, we were one of only three clubs in the zone that fielded a side and there has been a real buzz around it,” said Mr Davidson.

“It was the girls who decided to hold the all female tournament and we’re not sure, but we think it might be the only one in the state,” he said.

“Many of the girls played touch during the summer and league tag, but a few of them indicated that the reason they wanted to be part of thee 7’s is that it is full contact,” he said.

“I actually felt that during the season we attracted more people through the gate when the girls were on.

“The spectators were interested to see how they played, they got more rugby for their admission and I think everyone who came and watched it enjoyed it.

“There was a lot of hype throughout the season and everyone was really excited about them playing,” he said.

“We’re always out in front up here, we’re kicking goals,” he said.

“We’d love to see the community get out and support not only our girls, but rugby,” Bob Davidson said.
