WELL known up and coming hip hop, rap artists and DJ’s were in Scone last night performing for local youth as part of NAIDOC celebrations.

The performance included local youth performing, music from a digeridoo and artists including DJ Card 1, MC Nooky and Izzy ‘n’ the Profit.

Nooky performed at the Scone Youth Centre as part of NAIDOC celebrations.

Nooky was recently awarded the National Indigenous Artist Award – Dreaming Award and travelled from Nowra for his first performance in Scone.

“I was actually told it was just near Newcastle, so I was running late, because it’s obviously a bit further,” said Nooky.

“We wanted to come up and put on a good night and it might inspire someone to choose a career in music,” he said.

“I had a hard time when I was in school and as a release, to get rid of the emotions, I started song writing and it kept me out of trouble,” he said.

Nooky said his inspirations are Pemulway, Carlie Perkins, Briggs and Jimblah.

He is currently putting the finishing touches on an EP and is then making an album.

Brooke Martin from Scone Youth Centre said they didn’t realise how many local young people were indigenous and so they applied for NAIDOC grant to bring the artists to town and produce some artwork.

“It was brought to our attention on Sorry Day when we were having a discussion and we asked if anyone was indigenous and 15 out of the 45 young people put their hands up,” said Ms Martin.

“We wanted to expose them to the modern Aboriginal culture and teach them how to embrace their Aboriginality in a new way,” she said.

“It is amazing to have these artists here, Nooky has worked with the Black Eyed Peas and is about to do an album and it is great to have our youth inspired by people like him,” she said.

“This is hopefully the start of more to come,” Brooke Martin said.

PS: The Mayor was there, but was standing outside with the older folk and appreciated the cheer.
