AT approximately 2:51am on Sunday, Muswellbrook and Aberdeen fire crews responded to a house fire in Mount Street, Aberdeen.

When crews arrived at 2:58am the family had evacuated and a 51 year old male, who had gone back into the home to try and contain the fire with a garden hose, was suffering from smoke inhalation and minor shock.

Local fire crews reported that a female occupant woke to the sounds of cracking thinking it was her dogs playing, but was in fact the sound of the fire in the kitchen and say if she hadn’t woken to the sound the outcome may have been much worse.

The crews isolated the power and extinguished the fire, before investigating smoke in the roof space.

Local fire fighters said there were no smoke alarms in the house and implored people to ensure they had smoke alarms and never to go back into a burning building “as the smoke and fumes will kill you before the fire does.”
