WORK came to a halt at JBS food processing facility on Friday for a celebration that featured none other than a spit roast.

There was cake, balloons and celebrations to mark JBS three-year ownership of the Scone meat processing plant but more importantly, recognition of the service of long standing employees.

Twenty-two staff members with service at the site ranging from 15 to 34 years received recognition, a point plant manager Craig Miller said acknowledged the role these people had played in the growth of the plant.

“These people have worked at the site for a lot longer than JBS have been here and they have guided us to what works and have helped us grow our culture, we have now established a premium food establishment,” said Mr Miller.

“Early on we had some (community) concerns but three years on we celebrate success and these people have been key and have helped the sustainability of the plant’s success,”Craig Miller said.

The plant now employs 412 full time people with another 15 positions now open for applications.

Mr Miller stated existing employees came from Scone, Aberdeen and Muswellbrook and that there was no one working under 417 visa arrangements.

He said the company had brought people to the area to work here and that they now call the district home.

“We claim to be the largest industry in the Upper Hunter and we contribute significantly to the local economy,” Mr Miller said.

He added that not everyone had roles of packing meat but the organisation employed engineers, human resources specialists, accountants and nurses.

Opportunities such as those associated with the ‘paddock to plate’ concept and contracts with large suppliers such as Coles further secured the future of JBS and its suppliers in Scone.

“We have 360 growers that supply us direct,” Mr Miller said.

“Today was a day to celebrate three years here and we look forward to the future and continued growth,” he said.
