Junior Rugby Union – May 29

Filed in Sports Recent by May 31, 2016

Great sportsmanship was the theme of the day at the Inverell Gala Day last Sunday.

The sun was out and the frost had cleared, resulting in some sensational rugby.

Scone Junior Rugby Union teams made the four hour trek up north and continued to display strength and confidence on the field.

There was also amazing sportsmanship showed from all clubs, with players swapping teams to lend a hand and coaches providing tips and words of encouragement to all teams.

The Under-6’s were well represented and had a ball doing drills and putting their skills into practise with games.

They were all rewarded with a medal for their efforts and left for home tired and happy.

This Sunday, Scone players head to the Gunnedah Gala Day keen for more great competition and entertaining rugby.

Under 12s – Bob Davidson

Our longest trip of the year this weekend. With the Inverell carnival on the schedule, a very committed 10 players and their families made the journey.
Game 1 and we met a combined Walcha/Barraba outfit for the first time this season.

Great sportsmanship was shown by the Walcha coaching staff lending us 3 players to ensure all boys got a decent hit out.

Scone dominated possession for most of the game but in the end we could not turn possession into points and the game finished in a draw.
Game 2 was against the host Inverell and again many thanks to the coaching staff for lending us players.

Inverell were too strong on the day and it appeared our boys had used too much energy in the first game and the hosts beat us quite convincingly.
Game 3 against a 19 man strong Moree outfit.

The boys were really up for this game and showed amazing determination both in defence and attack to record a very pleasing 4 – 2 victory.
Great efforts on the day by Ryan, Aiden, Lachy, Angus and Jack T in the forwards. Jack F, Hunter, Jimmy, James and Josh in the backs.

I appreciate the effort of all those who made the trip and look forward to next week.

Under-10s

This week’s Under-10 ‘s matches saw 18 keen Rugby players make the short trip north to the Sapphire City.

” Tour de Inverell” started in earnest with the traditional pre-match dinner and indoor dodgeball game at the marvellous RSL club.

After an early night, brought on by some wonderful Crowther cricketing stories, the boys were up early and keen for some running rugby.

Game one was against the well drilled Narrabri Blue Boars who came out firing and managed to put a few early tries on us.

The Scone boys rallied in the second half and came back to equal 15 all with minutes remaining on the clock.

A great game by Austin Hill who seems to be gaining confidence each week and a brilliant effort also from Angus Beard, Harry Faulkner and Ben Officer.

Unfortunately our poor ball handling from the set piece let us down and Scone eventually went down 20-15.

In game two Scone lined up against the home side.

Inverell fielded two teams for their home carnival but managed to find a few big boppers from the nearby scrub to get stuck into our forwards early.

Will Crompton led the pack with some handy assistance from this year’s new recruit Shiv Porter.

Tommy Burnett pilfered and cleaned out the rucks to get some great ball to half back Max Patterson.

Our inside backs kicked into gear with Nick Gallagher and Cooper Wilson providing the X factor with some entertaining running moves.

Some great finishing work from Kale Saw allowed Scone to come away with a worthy victory 20 -10.

Our final game was against Tamworth, who have a big pack of well drilled forwards.

So far this year they have got the better of our tight 6 on most occasions in 2016.

The Scone boys really stepped up in game 3 and worked well as a team. Harry Faulkner led from the front with some big hits which gave some space for our backline to shine.

Will Nugent and  Will Officer played their best games so far this year with super subs Charlie Mitchell and Hugo Firth stepping up for a big game.

Scone ran away with the game in the end 30-5, a massive effort from four boys who helped out Walcha for the whole day – Charlie Mitchell, Higo Firth, Henry Hubbard and Sasha Studdy all displayed great sportsmanship to help out the red and white team.

Finally a big thank you to all the parents, grandparents and supporters who made the trek to Inverell.

Without you all, our kids wouldn’t be able to create great “florally” memories! Tour “de Inverell” done and “dusted” for 2016.

Under-8s – Evan Geary

After the relatively quick four hour drive to Inverell, the Scone Under-8 side was met by a brisk morning that turned into a beautiful day for rugby.

Nine boys and their entourages made the journey and soon got down to business in a hard fought affair against Armidale.

Hamish Davidson and Flynn Killman were strong up front and bagged a try each, ably supported by Lachlan Carter and Cooper Nicholl both in their first carnival for the new season.

Lachlan showing a very soft set of hands and Cooper was all over the paddock injecting himself when least expected.

Henry Teague played another game above his stature and gained a try for his hard work, while Laurie Roche had another blinder with five tries.

The next game against Narrabri was a very tough game with a few un-notified rule changes that took some getting used to.

Both Rory Moore, James Miller and Lindsay Geary took it in their stride with strong performances while Laurie and Henry scored tries.

The third game against Tamworth was a more evenly matched affair with the boys adjusting their game.

Laurie again stood out with some more tries and some great cover defence.

The boys then banded together for a bonus fourth game against Moree which saw another dominant performance and a strong team effort as fatigue started to set in.

Thanks to Inverell for a great carnival and looking forward to a shorter trip to Gunnedah this weekend.
