DIANA Gillett wanted to see Katie Noonan in concert, so when she saw Katie was offering a private concert as part of crowd funding for her new album Diana decided to bring Katie to Scone and now you are invited to the private concert: Lyrics on the Lawn.

“I had never been able to get to one of her concerts, so I thought I’ll pay for her to come to Scone so I will see her,” laughed Diana Gillett.

“I thought how amazing would it be to have someone like Katie come to Scone and have a concert and make it meaningful by having it as a fundraiser for Beyond Blue,” she said.

“So instead of thinking about how good it would be I decided to do it and I contacted her manager who got back to me straight away.

“It has been in the works for a year and a half now and I’m really excited that it is actually happening,” she said.

“She will perform at the Rugby Club, it’s going to be very laid back, we’ll have auction items, raffles and it’s a celebration,” Diana Gillett said.

Katie Noonan will perform in Scone.

Katie Noonan will perform in Scone in October.

Diana who suffered post-natal depression after the birth of her twins wants the concert to be a celebration and build awareness about mental health in our community.

“I grew up in a family which was very aware of mental illness, my Nan and my uncle both committed suicide and it was something we were very open in talking about it, but still when I got depression I still felt that I had failed in someway,” said Diana.

“It was my mother who put it in perspective for me, she was being treated for cancer at the time and she said ‘do you look at me poorly because I have cancer and I need treatment’? and I said ‘absolutely not!”

“And she said ‘well depression is exactly the same thing, if you had heart disease you’d take medication, if you had diabetes you’d take medication and depression is the same'”.

“Her words have always stuck with me and we need to be surrounded by lots of people who tell us that,” she said.

“Once you share your own experience a lot of other people come forward to talk to you about their experience and that’s important because many people think they need to hide their experience because they don’t want to be looked upon differently,” she said.

“I’ve realised people do look upon me differently now, now it is increasingly to share their stories and that’s a great thing,” she said.

“We should all be able to talk about mental health the way we talk about other health issues like cancer, diabetes and blood pressure,” Diana Gillett said.
