Lights for the Civic Theatre

THE Civic Theatre is a much loved building in the township of Scone and while the days of country cinemas may have disappeared since the advent of TV’s and videos the Civic will still have a place in the Scone streetscape.CIVIC_FINAL

Within the next twelve months there are plans for the neon signs on the theatre to be aglow once again.

The owner of the building, Minas Coroneo said plans are in train for the building and he is optimistic the lights can be operational within a year.

“It’s a great old building and it is intact all the bits are there it just needs to be tidied up and modernised a bit and a start has been made,” said Mr Coroneo.

“Originally when we were looking to get it painted I got the neon lights costed because one of the features of that street used to be the old sign and it was about $50,000 of neon lights alone, but the idea is to get them replaced and turn them on of an evening,” he said.

“So if we do nothing else in the next twelve months we hope to get that done,” Minas Coroneo said.

The Coroneo family have owned the Civic Theatre since the early 1950s and while country movie theatres are no longer financially viable, there are plans for the Civic to become a convention centre which can also accommodate the occasional movie.

Local builder Andrew McPhee has been engaged to renovate the Civic and while it is a slow process to renovate a heritage listed building, which has a myriad of regulations to comply with the owners are optimistic and look forward to the Civic once again being a focal point in the social life of Scone.

A series of animations has been done of old movie theatres showing what the neon lights used to look like, including an image of the Scone Civic Theatre, kindly provided by Paul Brennan.
