Murrurundi Water Restrictions Tighten

Filed in Recent News by April 24, 2019

WATER consumption in Murrurundi has jumped from an average of 166 kilolitres per day in July to more than 250 kilolitres per day.

Murrurundi has been on the highest level of water restrictions for more than nine months, with an emergency bore brought on line at a cost of $225,000 in September and water carting from Scone began in January at a cost of $160,000 to date.

Council said the costs are being carried by the Shire’s water fund as the NSW government will only cover “essential services” as determined by a level 6 water restriction. (See description below)

In their release Council stated, “if water use drops, Council could return to using only the in-town infrastructure and stop water carting. This would save the ratepayers of the Shire, substantial funds.”

Mayor Wayne Bedggood said, “we know that many residents are taking their water conservation very seriously, but we need everyone to renew their efforts.”

Council has asked residents to report any leaks or water wastage immediately and review tips on saving water: Hunter Water.

Level 6 water restrictions: town water must not be used for watering of lawns or gardens, topping up of pools or water features, or washing outside surfaces or vehicles. Shorter showers, shallow baths, filling dishwashers before use and other ways of minimising water use are encouraged.
