ON Saturday AGL announced plans for electricity generation after the retirement of Liddell in 2022 which include converting generators at the old plant to synchronous condensers, upgrades at Bayswater, diversifying with gas, renewables and hydro.

Graeme Hunt, Chairman of AGL said, “This plan demonstrates that old power plants can be replaced with a mixture of new, cleaner technology, while improving reliability and affordability.”

“Decisions for the investments are staged to enable flexibility to respond to the changing needs of the market and improvements in technology over the next five years,” he said.

The AGL board considered selling Liddell, however Liddell is needed until 2022 for electricity generation and shares infrastructure with Bayswater such as coal unloading facilities and water systems.

The company intends to source solar power from two solar power companies and scope a pumped hydro project in the Hunter.

It is projected closing Liddell will reduce AGL’s carbon footprint by 17.6 percent.

The company has stated it will not use forced redundancies when it closes in 2022.
