SCONE PLAYERS EXCEL AT TOURNAMENT

By Lyn Banks

The Hunter River District ladies golf championship tournament was played over two days at Cypress Lakes and Hunter Valley Golf Clubs.

See photos below.

On a very cold and windy day the singles event was played at the challenging Cypress Lakes golf course on Monday June 18. Players were rugged up with beanies and many layers and fortunately for the players, the rain stayed away. The course was the winner on the day with the greens very slippery and it seemed that this was the reason for those who had more shots than they wanted.

In a field of 85 players from clubs all through the Hunter Valley, Newcastle, Central Coast, northern NSW towns and Sydney, the Open District Champion was Jude Tarran from Shelly Beach who had a score of 86 scratch. Lyn Banks of Scone was the Closed District Champion as her round of 93 placed her well ahead of other competitors from the district and was a first for the keen golfer. Another local, Jodie Hinde from Muswellbrook club, had a great first tournament to be the ‘Over the Field’ Nett Champion with a fabulous 72 nett.

On Tuesday, June 19, 35 pairs contested the Foursomes event in 2 divisions at Hunter Valley Golf Club. It rained for most of the day with small periods of non-rain for some players later in the day. In an outstanding performance Scone players June Juke and Annie Woods combined to win the overall nett event with 71½ and bring home a grand trophy and appropriate vouchers. They also had the best scratch score in division 2. Jo Brown and Lyn Banks also from Scone, were the Division 1 nett champions with 78, and second overall in the scratch.  The scratch event was won by Jude Tarran and Anne Baker from Shelly Beach with 86 to complete a good two day event for Jude. Six hardy Scone players competed in very unusual and difficult conditions.

Despite the weather which made play extremely hard for all involved, the district event was successfully conducted and the HRGDA ladies match committee and the host clubs are to be commended for their efforts also.
