Scone Open: It was a big weekend of golf at Scone with the Scone Open weekend on September 17 and 18.

On Sunday the morning players had the better conditions with only a shower or two, but the late players got drenched for a number of holes.

Despite the dismal conditions a good field supported the event.

Nathan Waters won his fifth A.G. White Cup for the best scratch score with a fabulous 68. The Scratch runner up was Tom Bateman who had one over par 73.

In the stableford section local Troy Collison had a very good round in the morning to have 43 points and win the Bob Robb Cup. Murrurundi’s Phil Ledgerwood knows his way around the course and had 41 points to be the runner up.

Four stableford prizes were given in each grade and these went to:

  • 1st: A Grade: Sean Constable 39 c/b; B Grade: Glen Googe 40; C Grade: Milton Reid 37 c/b
  • 2nd: A Grade: Tim Smith 39 c/b; B Grade: David Taylor 37 c/b; C Grade: David Roe 37
  • 3rd: A Grade: Jake Teague 37 c/b; B Grade: Alexander Kean 37; C Grade: Keith Ryan 36.
  • 4th: A Grade: Brenan Reeves 37; B Grade: Craig Avard 34; C Grade: Robert Ryan 36.

The long drives were won by: A Grade: Nathan Waters; B Grade: Craig Avard; C Grade: John Greenwood.

There were NTP’s on each of the par 3’s but Robert Ryan’s shot was the best on the 8th when he finished at 0.15 metres, so close to a hole in one.

The other winners were: 2nd: Mac Dawson 1.51 metres; 11th: Nathan Waters 1.5 metres; 17th: Troy Collison 3 metres.

Appreciation must go to the major sponsors: Joel Woods Building, Scone Isis Motel, Farrams, Jason Taylor Muswellbrook Golf Shop and Scone RSL Group. Greenkeeper Adam Russell and those volunteers who helped prepare the course should be commended.

Play on Saturday September 17 for the Hunter Valley Printing Cup was much more pleasant.

On a soggy course Ross and Lyn Banks had 35 scratch stableford points to be the winners of the mixed event sponsored since 1987 by Mike and Leah Pritchard.

The runners up were Charlie Manning and Pam Manning whilst Gordon Halliday and Kerry McLennan with 40 points were the stableford winners.

In the men’s 4BBB Rod Spratt and Terry Winser had a fine 46 points to win on a countback from Jake Teague and Troy Collison.

The NTP’s went to Ross Banks 1.73 metres on the 2nd /11th whilst on the 8th /17th  Lyn Banks at 6.30 metres and Alan Wood 1.65 metres won the prizes.

The ball winners were: Rod Spratt and Terry Winser, Troy Collison and Jake Teague 46, Ross Banks and Lyn Banks, Scott Shann and Duncan Yuille, Red Palmer and Lindsay Hodge 45, Sean Constable and David Walters 44, Mick Alsleben and George Davidson, Adam Moore and Scott Shann 43 points.

On Saturday September 24 a 2B Multiplier Stableford for men and ladies in any combination will be played for the Whitehead Family Trophy.

It is the Jason Whitehead Memorial Day and also the “Fashions On The Course” theme for Gordon Halliday’s and Phil McGuirk’s awards.

On Thursday, September 15 the ladies finally were able to play the GNSW Qualifier 4B Par event on their fourth attempt during the season.

On a water laden course after the overnight rain, Kathy Robinson and Ann Cameron combined well to have + 4 to win the day and qualify for the playoff along with Marie Murray and Narelle Rutter who had + 1.

The individual par winner of the Sarah Howey Trophy was Sarah Brooks who had – 2.

The ball winners were Kathy Robinson, Sarah Brooks -2, Lyn Banks, Narelle Rutter and Ann Cameron all on -5.

The ladies will play an 18 Hole Stableford on Thursday September 22 for the Susie Macintyre Trophy.

All golfers and non-golfers will be welcomed at the “Come and Try day” on Sunday October 9 at Scone.
