TODAY local police received a frantic phone call from Scone resident, Karen McDonald who had arrived home to find an intruder of the most dangerous and slippery kind, a three and a half foot brown snake.

“I came home and as I went to put my handbag on the wall unit I saw a brown snake slither across the floor and behind the unit,” said Ms McDonald.

“I called the police to ask how to contact a snake catcher and the officer said one of the guys had done a snake catching course and they were on the way,” she said.

“By the time they arrived it had moved under the lounge, the officer moved the lounge and it’s then that you realise there are other scary things that fall under the lounge and he pulled out a pair of my nickers,” laughed Karen.

“The female officer was concerned she didn’t have any equipment if the snake headed towards her, but I said ‘yes you do, you have a gun!’

“She said she didn’t want to shoot holes in my house, but I said she was welcome to.

“Then we found the snake curled up on the cushion of the lounge, which is really scary to think I could have sat down beside it,” she said.

“The police were just exceptional, they really were fantastic,” Karen McDonald said.

Local police, Shaun Cloake and Ebony Moore apprehended an intruder of the most dangerous kind.

Inspector Ryan Froml, from the Hunter Valley Police District, said while police are trained to respond to intruders, not many are trained to apprehend this type of slippery character.

“On this occasion police were able to assist because an officer was on who had special training outside of his usual duties and was able to attend,” said Acting Inspector Froml.

“People can call police and we can coordinate the snake catcher, but the most important thing is not to try and catch it yourself,” he said.

Inspector Froml said he is not a fan of snakes and clarified there are no plans for Goulburn Police Academy to introduce snake catching into basic training – much to the relief of many police.
