Scone Stock Report: Nov 8

THERE were 881 cattle yarded and the market was quite strong.

The cow market was fully firm on last week, but only one bull.

Export steers were also fully firm.

There are more cattle coming forward with a lot of weight, many hitting the market are 350 or 400 kilos and that’s just due to the good season we have had for quite a few months now.

It’s very hard to find lighter cattle to go onto crop at this stage, we are seeing finished cattle hitting the market, but there are still fairly low numbers of finished cattle too.

Everything in the trade market was fairly firm and could have been stronger in a couple of places for feeder steers.

Normally at this time of year we’d be yarding 1400 or 1500 cattle but there are only 800 to 1000 at the moment.

There are some people who are holding on whilst they have feed and are just getting them heavier, because they are expensive to replace and they think if they have got the feed they may as well utilise it.

Even if prices are to drop, people are picking up on the weight of the cattle and weight is money.

Because there has been such a good spring, even when it dries off a bit the cattle will still do well on it.

The real green pasture is a bit like eating chocolate for four days, where as when it dries off it is a bit like eating vegetables.
