Scone’s Seniors Pampered

Filed in Recent News by March 8, 2017

“WE felt seniors should be pampered during senior week and really all year ’round,” said Lee Watts, manager of the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre.

“Seniors have invested so much into our community and do so much volunteer work we really need to take more time to recognise and appreciate their contributions,” Mrs Watts said.

More than 50 seniors booked out the pampering stations organised by the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre during the Seniors Expo staged by TransCare at the Scone Bowling Club today.

Ladies lined up to have their hair done by Locks and Rachel’s Hair and Beauty, their nails done by Boutique Beauty, a nice back massage by 3Massage and a pedicure by Kare’n for Feet Podiatry.

“The local businesses who have donated their time today to pamper our seniors for free really says a lot about how great our community is,” Mrs Watts said.

Dianne Pittard who claimed she was the youngest senior in the room said the expo was a great way to learn about the services available in town.

“I’ve learnt a lot about the services we have in Scone, there are so many different places that are there to give assistance,” Ms Pittard said.

“I’ve had my blood pressure taken by Ben and I’m booked to have my hair done, have a massage and then have a pedicure; I didn’t do the Zumba though, but it looked like fun,” she laughed.

Ben Butters, pharmacist at Scone Discount Drug Store said he was also surprised at the number of services available in regional and rural areas.

“I’ve been really surprised by what is out there,” said Mr Butters.

“It is a great way to educate people and today we are giving people free blood pressure tests and we can help them organise their medications,” he said.

“Some people’s medication regimes are really complex and it is a wonder they haven’t had problems, so we can help with webster packs and medication reminder services,” Ben Butters said.

Darren Gibson from the RSL Sub Branch of Scone and was on hand to explain what veterans and war widows may be entitled to and said they were usually surprised.

“For example with the gold card they don’t have to pay GST in a vehicle and they can update the vehicle every two years, even the parts for service are GST free,” Mr Gibson said.

Alan Gordon, chief executive officer of TransCare said there had been a fabulous turn-out with more than 100 seniors visiting the expo.

“It is a great venue and we are so lucky so many turned up,” said Mr Gordon.

“It is fabulous the groups here today to support the expo and give advice to our seniors, Kate Mailer was here giving advice on wills and estates, there is the pampering section which is very popular and Ben is here from the pharmacy,” he said.

“It is great to see all of the community services working together to help seniors and hopefully next year will be even bigger and better,” Alan Gordon said.
