See How Their Legumes Grow

LOCAL Land Services has conducted a trial to test the performance of 14 varieties of legumes in the Timor area and local farmers are invited to see the results.

Adam Bush, senior land service officer for Hunter Local Land Services said he visited the trial site today and the weather has made for strong yields.

The trial used 14 varities of legumes.

“It has been a cracking season for this type of pasture and there is certainly some height, there has been a really good response and growth rate over the period,” said Mr Bush.

“We conducted the trial to see which varieties performed the best in the type of conditions in the Timor area,” he said.

“How the varieties perform there would translate to other areas like Waverley in terms of rainfall and soil type, but would be completely different to somewhere like Merriwa,” he said.

“The Upper Hunter Sustainable Farmers Group wanted to have a look at the trial, so we’ve opened it up for all interested landholders to come and have a sticky beak,” he said.

“We’ll have information there on the day about the performance of each legume variety, the dry matter they produce, the protocols we used, the soil tests, how we addressed soil fertility and the process of direct drilling into a paddock instead of the old method of ploughing the country up,” Adam Bush said.
