AS of October 1 light trailers with breakaway brakes will be able to be registered locally saving owners a trip to a heavy vehicle inspection station.

Darren Gibson, owner of Scone Auto Port said there were many local people with horse floats who would be pleased to hear the rules have changed.

“Anything over two and a half tonne with breakaway brakes had to go down to a heavy vehicle inspection station and the closest ones are in Singleton, Tamworth or Newcastle, which was a hassle for most people,” said Mr Gibson.

“I’d say a good 90 percent of horse floats around here would have had to travel at least a two hour round trip to get them registered,” he said.

“This change on October 1 means people can now get them registered from anyone who is registered to do pink slips,” Darren Gibson said.

All Roads and Maritime Services authorised safety check inspection scheme stations (ASCIC) can inspect trailers that have an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) of 4.5 tonne or less including those fitted with breakaway brakes, except those fitted with air or vacuum (breakaway) braking systems from October 1.
