Sir Ivan Fire Downgraded

THE Sir Ivan fire is still out of control but this morning the alert level changed from emergency to watch and act and the Golden Highway remains closed between Dunedoo, Merriwa, Denham and the Hunter Expressway at Singleton.

Since the southerly change yesterday afternoon the fire has continued to move in a northerly direction towards the Black Stump Way, Leadville and Coolah and has burnt through 49,528 hectares.

Residents in Cassilis, Turill, Leadville and Coolah are advised to stay alert.

Today teams will assess buildings in the fire zone and report on loss and damage to property and livestock.

At 11am there will be a meeting at the Coolah Sporting Club and evacuation centres are operating at the Merriwa RSL and Club Mudgee.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the weather today will be much milder and better for fire fighters.

“There is a much milder air mass over the fire ground and temperatures are expected to be in the high 20’s to low 30’s,” said Zac from the Bureau of Meteorology.

“The conditions are certainly nothing like we saw yesterday when it was reaching catastrophic conditions,” he said.

“The winds are much lighter and from the south, so all in all conditions are much more ideal for the fire fighters today,” he said.

“It is likely to stay dry there is a slight hint of a shower tomorrow, but it won’t bring much in the way of rainfall and the next significant showers are not likely until at least Friday,” Zac said.
