Snow Possible this Week

THE Bureau of Metorology has not had any official reports of snow on the Barrington Tops last night, but said snow had been expected down to 1300 metres.

A resident of Tomalla said while there was no snow in their area, there were reports of a light dusting at Polblue.

Steph Spackman from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said the conditions are easing for the possibility of snow today but may become favourable during the next week with cold pools of air moving through the region.

“We haven’t had any official reports and unfortunately we don’t have a weather station up there that records snow, however, we were expecting some possible snow down to 1300 metres so the conditions were quite favourable for a dusting up there,” said Ms Spackman.

“”We have had this cold pool which has come across over the Barrington Tops overnight and had sufficient moisture being fed into the area as well from the low which is currently sitting in the Tasman, that south westerly moist airstream has definitely been enough to provide favourable conditions for snow in the area,” she said.

“There is another cold pool coming across associated with the next front, the surface of the front is going to dip down to the south but the cold pool will continue across and hang around New South Wales for a few days early into the weekend.

“We will have quite a good easterly  air stream of moisture coming in over the weekend, particularly through the Hunter and further north, it does look like a wet weekend but there is not much indication if that moisture and cold pool will align to have snow conditions but it is a possibility,” she said.

“The cold pool of air is in the mid level of the atmosphere, usually when we get snowfall in the middle of winter up in this part of the world you have that upper cold pool of air that coincides with moisture and you get snow,” Steph Spackman said.
