THE Bureau of Meteorology predicts there will be snow on the Barrington Tops tomorrow, as the coldest air passes over during the day and local police warn people sightseeing to take proper precautions.

Rain is predicted to pass through the region early in the morning, creating the chance of snow above 1200 metres and showers in the Upper Hunter, but only bringing 2 to 5 mls.

The maximum temperature on the Barrington tomorrow will be 7 degrees and it will reach 15 in Scone.

A spokesperson for the Bureau said Sunday night will be especially cold, with the temperature dropping to -1.

“It will feel particularly cold because of the combination of the low temperature, the windy conditions will make it feel colder and any showers passing through will make it really feel like winter,” he said.

POLICE CAUTION

LOCAL police caution people sightseeing at Barrington to take proper precautions for the conditions.

Inspector Guy Guiana of Hunter Local Area Command said snow in the area can attract hundreds of vehicles and quickly create conditions where vehicles can get bogged.

“If you are venturing into areas where the snow might be falling make sure you are in a properly prepared 4WD vehicle,” said Inspector Guiana.

“Make sure you take food, water and plenty of warm clothing so that you are prepared for unforeseen circumstances such as getting stuck,” he said.

“Even if there is snow on the ground and it is bright sunny day, conditions can change very quickly and roads are prone to icing throughout the day.

“Check before venturing up there as some roads may close depending on conditions.

“Always drive to the conditions, take it slowly on dirt roads, there are a lot of blind corners on the road up there, so to be very careful.

“Police do not recover vehicles if they become stuck, we will assist people,  but not vehicles,” he said.

“Travel with more than one vehicle in case you get bogged as it will be difficult to get anyone to get out of there,” Inspector Guy Guiana said.
