SCONE Junior Rugby Union’s Edward Bell has received the “Spirit of Rugby” Award for his never give up attitude and dedication to the sport of rugby.

The Award was received by the under-14s player at the Scone Junior Rugby Union presentation night held on Friday, September 9.

It is an award only handed out when a player displays the true “Spirit of Rugby” through skills, sportsmanship, self-worth and friendship.

Edward’s coach Ollie Hall said Ed had shown passion, club spirit, commitment, dedication and great leadership.

When Ed realised there were not enough numbers to field a Scone under-14s team for the Cauliflower Cup, he rallied to put a team together.

“This young man, wanting to be part of the day himself, and realising that his home club was hosting this day without representation, phoned his many friends and contacts and successfully put forward a nomination for a Scone team,” Hall said.

“This wasn’t easy either as he had to make many attempts to get over the line.”

During the presentation evening, the club also awarded a scholarship to the National Rugby Camp, held in Armidale in January 2017, to under-12s player Dan O’Regan.

The event also included an auction of jersey numbers for the 2017 season.

All numbers 1 – 15 were successfully auctioned off and Scone Junior Rugby Union President Tor Killman said the club appreciated the support of Sponsors.

He said the season had been a great success, with the club hosting the Country Championships, Cauliflower Cup and Scone Gala Day.

“Each week, our players have gone from strength to strength in the Central North competition,” he said.

“The players and coaches have worked hard and it shows on the field.”

Killman said 2017 was shaping up to be a big year with the first Scone Junior Rugby Union Tour (under-12s) to New Zealand, which has been organised by SJRU vice president Angus Patterson.
