State Championships in Scone

Filed in Sports Recent by May 27, 2016

THIS weekend Scone plays host to more than 500 young rugby union players and their families from throughout the state as part of the under 15’s and under 16’s Country Championships.

Teams include the Central West, Illawarra, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Central Coast, Far North Coast and the Central North, with three local Scone boys playing for the Central North under 15’s side: Matt Smart, Aidan McGuinnes and Braden Cook.

Michelle Edwards, coordinator of championships for Scone Junior Rugby Union, said it is a great event to have in town and she encourages local people to show their support and watch some of the best young rugby players in the state.

“The whole town is booked out, with some teams and referees having to stay in Muswellbrook, so all of the pubs and clubs will be busy feeding everyone this weekend; it is great for the town,” said Ms Edwards.

“Entry is free and the best young players in the state are playing rugby here this weekend, so it is well worth a look,” she said.

“All those players are up for selection into the New South Wales country squad and then that squad will then slowly be diminished down to about 23 players and then they will end up culminating in city v country games and then they select a New South Wales team,” she said.

“The under 16’s will be playing on the Scone Brumbies field and the under 15’s will be playing across the road on the field at Scone Park,” she said.

“Part of Aberdeen Street will be blocked so that pedestrians can walk between the two ovals safely,” she said.

“Canteens will be running at both fields and have plenty of food including warm pies, steak sandwiches and coffees; there is no alcohol at any junior games, but plenty of soft drinks and coffee,” she said.

Game times:

  • Saturday: 9am – 3:30pm;
  • Sunday: 8:30am – with finals at approximately 12 midday.
