LOCAL Ambulance are warning residents to take care during the heat wave through the Hunter.

Mark Bell, station manager at Scone Ambulance said to date people have stayed well during the heat and by following some simple advice they should weather warmth.

“It’s important to try and stay out of the heat ad if you need to g out, get it done early, don’t mow lawns or move stock if it is going to be 44 degrees,” said Mr Bell.

“Often people will just duck out to do some work and think it will only be a couple of hours, but in this heat you can dehydrate quickly,” he said.

“Dressing for the weather is important to and especially the older generation who are used to ‘dressing to go to town’ can wear too many layers,” he said.

“Often we will find older ladies we are called to help are wearing stockings, a petticoat and those things, which in this hot weather is best to go without, keep things casual and stay cool,” he said.

“Try and limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume because that dehydrates you and drink plenty of water, water is king,” he said.

Jumping in the water can be a great way to cool off but Mr Bell warns to stay in the shade.

“I’ve done some horrible sunburns to the point where they are admitted to hospital treated for burns and the strength of the sun is just unreal at the moment,” he said.

Signs and symptoms to be aware of include passing out, decreased response and decreased or no urine output.

If in doubt call the ambulance or phone the local hospital for support.

People with pre-existing conditions such as people on blood pressure medications, with diabetes and people with heart conditions can be particularly vulnerable to dehydration.

Local veterinarian warn the same precautions in the heat taken by humans need to be taken for pets, who also need to remain cool, inactive and with plenty of fluids.
