Stock Report: January 23

THERE were 3,430 cattle yarded at the Scone sales yesterday.

The cow market was fully firm on last week and may have been a fraction stronger in parts with store cows going back to the paddock.

There would have been probably 400 to 500 cows.

The majority of the yard was made up of calves, weaners and yearling cattle.

Good lines of cattle held up quite well and they would have been a little bit cheaper but not a lot.

Secondary and inferior cattle they were cheaper, which was to be expected yarding 7,000 cattle in two weeks.

Overall it was ok considering the conditions and how many cattle were yarded.

Some of the buyers we’ve seen over the last few weeks were absent, because obviously they’ve filled up, but then there were also a couple of new faces.

There were not as many buyers out of the south this time, the majority were from the north, there were a lot from New England, Casino and Warwick and a few buyers from the west.

The first thing to go are your old cows, with people trying to hold onto their younger breeders, which is their future.

Then there are the calves to go, to take the pressure off the cow.
