THE SES had more than 15 call outs and more than 1200 homes were left without power following a hail storm in the Upper Hunter yesterday. (Update: Final Tally was 2000 Homes).

One home on Allan Cunningham Road had a third of its roof blown off, but residents were grateful the local SES responded quickly.

“We were in town and our 14 year old daughter was at home when the storm hit,” said Rodney Bushby.

“She tried to get the horses in by herself before it hit and was soaking wet,” he said.

“She ended up taking cover under the table inside with the dogs under there with her when the roof was blown off the house,” he said.

“We tried to get back as soon as we could but there was a lot of debris across the road and I thought the hail would crack the windscreen of the car,” he said.

“The SES got here really quickly, within half an hour there were people here from the SES putting tarps on the roof and I’m sure they had a lot of jobs,” Mr Bushby said.

Tin ripped of the roof of the house hit the shed with enough force to buckle the door.

The residents are thankful they were safe and none of their animals were injured.

Neil Wiblin, duty officer for the SES said the local crews were quickly supported by Aberdeen and Muswellbrook crews.

“The storm was fairly slow moving over Scone and Aberdeen and featured very heavy rain and some hail and we’ve had 15 jobs, most of which were problems with roofs leaking, gutters backing up and when there is hail it tends to occur,” said Mr Wiblin.

“There were a couple of properties which suffered minor flooding, we responded to a car which got stuck in flood water in Liverpool Street and a house on Allan Cunningham which had a third of its roof blown off,” he said.

Powerlines were down on Moobi Road, Scone causing an outage to more than 1,200 homes.

Ausgrid restored power to most homes by 9:53pm, with further work to continue today.

The Mayor of the Upper Hunter Shire Council was unable to confirm if the sewerage treatment plant was operational following the power outage and there was no further report available on how Council infrastructure was impacted or details on how Council staff responded.
