The man was of Filippino background, worked at JBS in Scone and had lived in the flat for more than five years.

Violet said she hadn’t heard any disturbance at the flat and was shocked when police told her there had been an incident.

“It’s just such a shock I didn’t expect anything like this,” said Ms Baker.

“It was so close and he was such a nice fella and that’s what I can’t understand,” she said.

“We talked the night before and he was going away for Christmas, he brought me a Christmas present and he was going away camping with his cousin,” Violet Baker said.

Ms Baker said he often had family stay with him and was very family orientated.

Another neighbour said she noticed the curtains in the man’s flat had been torn down and wondered if something had happened.

The 20 year old man who went to police this morning and has been placed under arrest was a Muswellbrook resident.
