SCONE took on Denman at Scone Park last Sunday and recorded three wins for the day with reserve grade having the bye.

League Tag

League tag was a convincing 48 nil win following a 28 to nil half time score.

The undefeated Thoroughbreds were expected to win, however the score line did not really reflect the game as Denman had, at times, good periods of defence.

Scone’s ability to score from long range meant that if there was a lapse, chances were it would cost points.

Sofie Casson scored shortly after the kick off with an effort which started near her own try line.

It was a further ten minutes however before Maddy Adams made the most of a great pass from Abbey van Balen.

Adams was instrumental five minutes later when she made a break and found Casson backing up to cross for her second.

Lisa East slipped past quite a few attempted tags before scoring her try and Ally Luck finished the first half, making the most off a very nice Sally Gordon pass.

Charmaine Bloomfield converted four out of five for the 28:0 half time score.

Four second half tries went to Abbey van Balen, Ally Luck for her second, Brooke Noble and Sally Gordon, Bloomfield converted two of these.

A real feature of these tries was that they were very much team efforts, particularly Noble’s in which the majority of the team filled in the line and handled the ball.

Coach Casson gave credit to the Denman team, “we didn’t expect an easy game and the score doesn’t really tell the story.”

“It was a good effort by the team and I was especially pleased with the skills and team play that we showed” she said.

Under 18’s

The Under 18 game was expected to be the closest of the day, the young Thoroughbreds were committed from the whistle and this produced a 16 to nil half time score.

The game started with a sin bin to players from both sides within the first ten minutes.

The Scone team scored during this period with Lachlan Walmsley crossing in the corner.

It was Lachlan Duwakin ten minutes later who finishied off a nice backline movement, with  five minutes to go Ian Carter provided a nice ball to Walmsley to get his second in the first session.

Two Walmsley conversions provided the half time score.

A ‘ruckus’ after the half time hooter resulted in both teams once again playing short for the first ten minutes of the second half.

It was Denman to open their account after ten minutes scoring from a bomb after they had been held up several times over the line with repeat sets.

Lachlan Duwakin was able to respond with his second try, soon after following Scone pressing the Denman line.

Denman responded virtually straight away, thanks to a Scone error from the kick off to bring the score to 20:10 with plenty of time left.

Walmsley took a tap near the line with five minutes to go and somehow strolled over the line untouched providing a winning buffer of 26:10 after his conversion.

Denman never gave up and managed a late try at the very end of the game to provide a 26:16 final score.

Coach Darryl Rando was pleased with the win, “that was an important win for us at this time of the year.”

“Our discipline needs to improve with two in the sin bin however I was not too worried given the circumstances,” he said.

First Grade

The First Grade was a match between top of the table and the bottom and when Denman were only able to field twelve players to start the game, it was always going to be a difficult day for them.

The scoring started early and continued regularly with the Thoroughbreds getting to 52:0 at half time.

Denman’s account wasn’t assisted when they had a player in the sin bin for ten minutes and also had injuries so that their numbers were down to ten at half time.

Denman continued on courageously until twenty minutes into the second half when further injury resulted in the game being called off with the score at 70:0.

Try scorers for Scone were Haydon Topliss (3), Tim Watson (3), Kyle Wilcher (2), Tim Smith (2), James Carascaolo, James Eveleigh, and Isaac Austin, John Johnson – 6 conversions, Jarrod Wicks – 3 conversions.

Coach Daniel Ritter acknowledged the Denman team for their efforts, “the team has had a very difficult year and for those 12 players to turn up and still put in their best effort is a credit to their Club.”

“We still have a game to go and will be concentrating on a strong finish leading into the semis” he said.
