Round 8 Report – Scone Rugby League Football Club

By David Casson

Scone teams played at different venues and different days for round 8.

Reserve Grade and Ladies League Tag took on Merriwa away on Saturday while First Grade and Under 18’s travelled to Muswellbrook for Sunday matches.

The weekend finished with wins to First Grade, Reserve Grade and Ladies League Tag while the Under 18’s went down to their top of the table opposition.

Saturday afternoon started with the Ladies League Tag. Captain Coach Sofie Casson and Maddy Adams backed up from an earlier game in Dubbo playing for Greater Northern Tigers where they were narrowly defeated.

There were no obvious signs of fatigue however with the girls scoring 4 and 2 tries respectively.

The scoring started early with Casson crossing just after the kick off.

This was the first of three in the first half with Maddy Adams and Charmaine Bloomfield also crossing the line.

Bloomfield converted two for a 26:0 score at oranges.

Merriwa started the second half well picking up their defence and  being first to score after 10 minutes. While there wasn’t too much between the teams generally, Scone still managed to cross for another three tries to Casson, Adams and Sarah Thomas. Bloomfield added one conversion for a final score of 40:4.

Coach Casson was pleased with the efforts “Merriwa cannot be underestimated and never give up. The girls stuck to their guns and some of the tries came from moves we have been practising for ages which is great to see”

The Reserve Grade looked like it was going to be a very close tussle when scores were locked at 12:12 at half time thanks to tries to Tom Vincent and Josh Noble, who converted both.

The second half was a different story however with the Thoroughbreds adding 22 unanswered points in the second half to run out convincing winners – 38:12.

Second half contributors were Tom Vincent for his second, Chris Brenna, Dale Robinson, Tom Richardson and Tom Hunt.

Noble also added another three conversions.

Coach Brennan said that the first half really tested his team however the second half was a little easier “Merriwa are a good team however we managed to get on top of them in the second half. There is not much difference in the teams this year and we need to stay on our toes to be near the top of the competition table”

The First Grade clash saw the top two teams in the competition clashing and the game didn’t disappoint.

The Thoroughbreds had Daniel Ritter, Tim Watson and Josh Adams backing up from Greater Norther Tigers duties the day before however Scone started well and racked up an early lead thanks to tries from Jarrod Wicks and Joe Adams.

Haydon Topliss converted one while Muswellbrook also crossed before half time for a 10:4 lead.

The second half was all Scone initially with two penalties and a converted Daniel Ritter try saw the score go out to 22:4.

Muswellbrook showed last time they clashed that you cannot go to sleep against them, and following a sin bin to Tom Hagan, pounced on their opportunities to get the score back to 22 all.

An inspirational converted try to Josh Adams however broke the deadlock and a later penalty saw a final result of 30:22.

Coach Ritter complemented the opponents on their game “Muswellbrook are a very strong team and once again showed that you cannot ease up when you have the lead. Our team responded when they needed to towards the end of the game and we managed to scrape home”

The Under 18’s took on the top of the table Muswellbrook team.

While still under strength, the boys put in a solid effort although they lost 16:6.

Coach Darryl Rando praised the defensive efforts – “that was a tough game and the boys never gave up. We had a good defensive effort however we were a bit off in attack which showed in the score line”
