Mary Spora, youth services supervisor for the Upper Hunter Shire Council said it was wonderful to feel the energy surrounding the youth council meetings.

“The students enjoy sharing ideas and realising they are able to create new possibilities for themselves and other young people in the Upper Hunter Shire,” Mrs Spora said.

At the first meeting a workshop on event planning was held and students were able to hone their skills in speaking at school assemblies.

The students will now take ideas back to their respective schools to gauge the most popular ideas to work on.

Waid Crocket, general manager of the Upper Hunter Shire Council, welcomed the students.

“I hope the Youth Council sends the Upper Hunter Shire Council and myself their thoughts on youth issues and how Council could best support and encourage young people,” Mr Crocket said.

“A focus of the meeting was to welcome new members of the Youth Council and explain to them how the Youth Council works,” he said.

“The more experienced members were able to give examples of projects they have been involved with and how they organised and promoted their activities and events,” said Waid Crockett.

The Upper Hunter Youth Council meets twice a term in various meeting venues around the Shire.
