THE Aussie Ark is proud to announce the arrival of 51 Eastern quolls at their conservation facility on the Barrington Tops.

Pouch inspections revealed the 51 joeys, breaking previous breeding records of the cute marsupial, which has been extinct on mainland Australia since 1963.

This is the third breeding season for the Easter quolls at the Aussie Ark and their new numbers will help build a robust insurance population for their species.

Tim Faulkner, president of the Aussie Ark, said pouch checks are an exciting time for their conservation team.

“It’s an exciting time of year for the whole team when we do the Eastern quoll pouch checks and to see how much the population has grown,” said Mr Faulkner.

“Eastern quolls were once common throughout Australia, but sadly can now only be found in the wild in Tasmania,” he said.

“They are an important part of our ecosystem with their appetite for rabbits, mice and rats keeping the populations of these pests under control,” Tim Faulkner said.

Fast Facts on the Eastern Quoll:

  • mainland extinction was caused by feral pests such as cats, foxes, as well as poisoning and trapping;
  • Tasmania is the only area where the Eastern quoll still exists in the wild;
  • all species of wild quoll have declined across Tasmania by more than 50% in the 10 years to 2009;
  • only 10,000 quolls of all species are estimated to be left in Tasmania;
  • numbers of Eastern quolls have fallen rapidly and they are edging closer to extinction.

You can help Aussie Ark’s mission tosave endangered native wildlife from extinction by ‘adopting’ an Eastern quoll for as little as $25 a month. Go to https://www.aussieark.org.au/adopt/ to find out more.
