ANZAC Day in Gundy

A large crowd gathered in Gundy as the Scone RSL Pipes and Drums band led a  procession to the Gundy Soldiers Memorial Hall.

Also marching were children representing local schools from Ellerston Public School, Belltrees Public School, Scone Grammar, Scone High, Scone Public and St Joseph’s High School.

Several children of local families now in Farrer, The King’s School and Abbotsleigh made up the procession. 

John Wharton, President of the Gundy ANZAC Day Committee spoke followed by  Reverend Nate Atkinson, Christian and Religious Studies Coordinator of Scone Grammar School and NSW Police Chaplain who gave the Prayer of Thanksgiving.

The main address to a packed hall was given by Joel Bates, Captain of Scone Public High School in 2016.

Joel travelled to Gallipoli in Turkey in 2015 as part of a multi-school tour. He recounted in vivid detail the poignancy and tragedy of those who participated in the many battles of the Gallipoli campaign.

The service was followed by a community morning tea in the hall.

Nick Johnson ran a two up game at The Linga Longa Inn followed by an enthusiastic and vocal crowd.

To round out the days’ events, William Hodgetts, Principal of Ellerston Public School conducted a succession fund raising raffle to support an upcoming Sydney school visit.
