Breaking: Cama Released on Bail

Ilipsa Cama, who was sentenced to 18 months gaol today, has been released on bail this afternoon, pending an appeal to the district court.

Magistrate Donnelly sentenced Cama to 18 months gaol with a non-parole period of 12 months, following an on field attack on Ryan Holman which he described as “ferocious”. 

However, within minutes of being sentenced, Cama’s defence lodged an appeal on the severity of the sentence and sought an application for bail.

The prosecution argued that Mr Cama, as a Fijian citizen posed a flight risk and may fail to appear if he was released from custody. 

The defence, Mr Hoffman, argued that Mr Cama had attended Wyong police station for the initial arrest and has attended all court dates since his arrest, even when a custodial sentence was the possible outcome.

Mr Hoffman also argued that Mr Cama’s wife was an Australian citizen and they have three small children together.

Magistrate Donnelly noted Mr Cama had surrendered his passport to police, had no previous criminal history, had been reliable in attending court and granted bail.

Conditions of Mr Cama’s bail include he is to live at his home in Gorokan, report to Toukley Police station every Sunday and make no application for a passport.

A court date for the appeal is yet to be determined.
