Council is warning residents to hold down their toilet seats during sewer testing which began today.

During the next two months approximately 1.6 kilometres of sewer mains and associated house connections across the Shire will be cleaned, repaired and relined.

The sections of mains were identified as problematic following inspections with closed circuit television earlier this year.

Alan Fletcher, director of infrastructure services for Upper Hunter Shire Council said the work will increase the life of the aged sewer mains and improve the efficiency of the sewerage network.

Residents in the impacted areas will be giver 48 notice and are advised to hold down their toilet seats between 7am and 6pm in case there is back pressure and limit their use of toilets, baths, showers, sinks, dishwashers and washing machines.

Streets which will be affected include:

  • Merriwa: Bettington Street, Dutton Street, Mackenzie Street, and Marquet Street;
  • Murrurundi: Mayne Street, Murulla Street, and Polding Street;
  • Scone: Kingdon Street, Liverpool Street, Birrell Street, Coolibah Street and Aberdeen Street.
