Horse Festival Cancelled And Scone Cup Closed to Public

THE Scone Horse Festival has been cancelled and public attendance at the Darley Scone Cup has been cancelled for this year, following the announcement of banning gatherings of 500 people or more on Friday by the federal government.

David Gatwood, president of the Scone Horse Festival said the committee met last night to discuss the Coronavirus and the impact on the Festival.

“The announcement by the Prime Minister on Friday regarding the banning of ‘non-essential’ gatherings of 500 plus people, and genuine concern for the health and wellbeing of our community has driven the decision to cancel this year’s festival,” said Mr Gatwood.

“The planned Music Event, Horse Parade, Scone Cup Carnival and Picnic at Lake Glenbawn all attract large crowds and would breach the Federal Government’s decree,” he said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee, our Sponsors and trust the general public will understand this has been a difficult decision for all involved,” David Gatwood said.

THE Scone Race Club has also cancelled public attendance at the Darley Scone Cup Carnival for this year and all pre-purchased tickets will be refunded.

A statement from the Club said it was a difficult decision, but was in the best interests of the community due to the influx of supplies and infrastructure required from many outside the region which could raise health risks and financial exposure.

The Club will continue to liaise with Racing NSW on all other race meetings in Scone and advise the public of any changes.
