Opening the Doors to More Community Support

Filed in Just In by April 20, 2020

THE current pandemic has brought to light a range of people in our community who have been isolated for some time and the help from the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre is set to continue well after self-isolation restrictions are lifted, explained Lee Watts, manager of the Centre.

“The food deliveries, pick up shopping or medications, drop off books or make a quick phone call to touch base which our volunteers have been doing to support the community through the pandemic has shown us just how many people in our community need these services ongoing,” said Ms Watts.

“There are many people that are isolated in their homes for different reasons and has gone unnoticed until now,” she said.

“This is a time to create the structure that can continue to support this community into the future and I believe many of these services will continue even after we get the ok to open our services,” she said.

“Our volunteers are getting a lot of helping too, there are a range of tasks for them that help fill in their own long hours of isolation, by supporting the most vulnerable in our community,” she said.

“The Scone RSL has been incredibly generous and has donated boxes of groceries for people in our community doing it tough and for people who can pay for their own groceries we can pick them up for them, or pick up medications, we are here to help everyone,” she said.

“Our doors may currently be closed, but we are working harder than ever helping our community and anyone who needs an extra hand, an errand run or anyone who can volunteer can phone us,” she said.

“It is a difficult situation for all of us, but it is always wonderful to see how our community pulls together,” Lee Watts said.
