Scone Golf Report: March 7-8

By Lyn Banks

It was a cool day for golfers at Scone on Saturday, March 7 for the playing of the Scone RSL Group Monthly Mug. The course was heavy after rain during the week and it became quite windy in the afternoon. Playing off the blue markers the winner of the Mug was Ross Banks who had a fine round for 66 nett.

The grade prizes were won by Mick Alsleben in A Grade with 39 points, Lyn Banks in B Grade also with 39 points and by Daryl Dutton in C Grade with 35 points. Balls went to all these players plus John Roe 35, Brad Hockley, Peter Teague 34, Charlie Wintle, Jake Teague and Les Cottam 33 points.

With four NTP’s on offer from now on, two very good shots were rewarded on the 4th and 13th holes. Duncan Yuille’s shot to 1.03metres was straight over the pin on the 4th whilst Mick Alsleben won the 13th at 1.99 metres. The 8th went to Daryl Dutton at 3.6 metres whilst the 17th was more difficult for the players with Peter Teague doing the best at 12 metres.

It was also Round 1 of the R. J. Lowrie Cup with Ross Banks’ 42 points and Mick Alsleben’s 39 points setting them well ahead of the rest of the field. Round two will be played on Saturday March 21.

On Saturday, March 14 an 18 Hole Stableford will be held with prizes kindly sponsored by Scott Reid. It will also be Round 1 of the Captain’s Trophy. The Kevan’s Knockout draw for 2020 is displayed on the noticeboard. Those players who have drawn a first round match, need to have it completed by April 4. Players are urged to play their matches as early as possible.

The ladies did not play their scheduled Monthly Medal on Thursday, March 5 with morning rain deterring the field. On Thursday, March 12, an 18 Hole Stableford will be played sponsored by the Scone RSL Group.

In the first round of the Hunter River District ladies pennant played on March 2, the team defeated Muswellbrook 4½ to 1½ at Cypress Lakes. Lyn Banks and Julie Leckie won both the scratch matches 3 & 1 and 4 & 3 respectively, Dordie Bragg had a square, Jodie Hinde lost 1 down whilst Cheryl Clydsdale and Annie Woods both had big wins 7 & 6 and 5 & 4. Round 2 will be played against Hunter Valley on March 16 at The Vintage.

In the men’s A Grade Pennant on Sunday, March 8, Scone travelled to Singleton to play Cypress Lakes in round 6 of the competition. Scone caused an upset with a very good win 3/ 2 over the leading team. Joel Harrison had a great win 5&4, Jake Teague got up 3&2 and Captain Mick Alsleben won 1 up. Brenan Reeves and Matt Hobbs both lost 3&2. The next round is at The Vintage on Sunday March 15 with Scone to play Maitland.

A contingent of nine Scone ladies supported the annual Hawks Nest Classic which was played over two days on March 2 and 3. Whilst they weren’t amongst the prize winners, they enjoyed the challenge of this tree lined course. This week commencing March 10, Julie Leckie and Annie Woods will be playing the Upper Hunter Veterans Week of Golf at Muswellbrook on four days.
