THERE’S fame and fortune to be had for local high school students with the Scone Literary Festival writing competition.

The 500 word stories must feature the theme Magic and Power, the winner receives $500 and students from the Upper Hunter and Muswellbrook Shires can enter.

“We are all about encouraging the love of writing and literature and this creative writing competition is so important to our festival’s aims,” said Janie Jordan, President of the Festival.

“And what high schooler wouldn’t want a chance at winning $1,000 worth of prizes overall,” she said.

“That’s a whack of pocket money!” says Jordan.

Last year’s inaugural contest was won by Year 12 Scone Grammar School student, Kaitland Parker with her touching story Stargazers.

Kaitland won $400 and was awarded a certificate by well-known author Rosalie Ham, who wrote highly acclaimed book The Dressmaker.

Author, Rosalie Ham said the story Stargazers is both well written, subtle and engaging.

“The author uses literary devices and is descriptive though doesn’t use extraneous words,” said Ms Ham.

“It’s also an evocative story, emotive with a sense of tension and ‘mystery,” she said.

“A simple story with great resonance,” Rosalie Ham said.

Second prize went to Year 9 Scone High School student Phoebe Farley for her story A light in the Darkness, and third prize to Year 9 Muswellbrook High School student Ella Murray with her atmospheric, poetic and clever story of a budding new romance A connection by coffee.

Entries close October 1.
