Sir Ivan Fire Update: Feb 16

Filed in Recent News by February 16, 2017

MORE smoke will be seen today around the Sir Ivan Fire area with fire crews taking the opportunity to backburn some areas.

Matt Horwood from the Rural Fire Service said they are continuing efforts to contain the fire with the goal to call it contained later this afternoon.

“It hasn’t yet been officially contained, it was pretty close to that with more strengthening of control lines today blacking out and mopping up supported by troops on the ground plus a couple of helicopters”.

“They are strengthening some of the control lines in a couple of places with some backburning that might generate a little bit more smoke, we’ve got out of area strike teams that have come in from far afield as well,” said Matt Horwood.

“The goal was by the end of the day to officially call it contained, the fire is not spreading any further and is in control lines making sure that it is all secure ahead of a bit of warmer and windier weather potentially tomorrow and Saturday”.

The RFS still wishes drivers to be cautious on the roads in the area.

“There are fences down and there is lots of stock around and they can be on the road, the grass is that long on the side of the road you can’t see them in the grass” Matt Horwood said.
